Here is an email sent to a member of the New Kadampa Survivors from a mexican woman who did a working visit at an NKT centre in the UK the same centre that kicked him out after he had a nervous break down from the excessive labour he had to induce while working for the centre!

This proves to us that Chris Heyes displays cult like beaviour, and proves the inocence of Nathaniel
Whiteman!

Hi Nathaniel,

I hope you are fine. The new year already started. I am getting every day well, thanks to the support of my family. I hope you are more than fine, happy and living the life you want to live. I am taking my time to be in balance. I suffered a break down in Amoghasiddhi Centre, but instead of having medical assistance I was thrown out. I can not believe it. I think they are not buddhist. This is not compassion. My family witness the situation, because they called Chris Heyes and the new young admin director, Nick, requesting them to allow me to stay one day, so my mother could find a flight from Mexico to England and pick me up. This request was deny. Why? They even said to my mom and sister that I was a threat to the center. That´s a strong accussation. Where is their faith that by assistance, help and patience benefits others?

I remember Chris asking me if I have mental problems. When I told this to another nun, she laughed at Chris. Many years of teaching Dharma, and he doesn´t know that everybody has mental problems? Besides, is it suitable to ask this question to someone who is suffering a break down?

Nathaniel, do you know who is Kelsang Shakya? did he ask you to have sex with you? how long has been in Amoghasiddhi Centre? does he complains a lot? does he provokes people by talking in double sense with a sexual tendency? did he use to make a natural medicine when you were there with garlics, onions among other elements? Is that a recipe from South Africa to cure sinusitis? do you know Crispian? do you know Jack and his little child? do you know Cheara, an italian girl? Tell me more about Chris Heyes, please.

The Journal (UK)/January 26, 1999
By Gareth Walsh

A Buddhist sect at the centre of complaints from concerned families is seeking to strengthen its North powerbase.

Followers of the New Kadampa Tradition, once linked with allegations of a plot to overthrow the Dalai Lama, already boast a string of UK properties including two country houses, one of them their headquarters and home of their spiritual leader.

Overseas worshippers of the deity Dorje Shugden have been questioned over the brutal murder and mutilation of one of the Nobel Prize-winning Dalai Lama’s closest confidants and two other monks.

And devotees in the NKT have been accused of putting family relationships under strain as their acolytes follow a fast track into the faith.

The NKT is now planning to open a new residential centre in Newcastle. In addition to the sect’s HQ in a neo-gothic mansion in Ulverston, Cumbria, the NKT has an established residential centre in Milton Street, Darlington, County Durham, and a Georgian mansion near York.

It already holds teachings in 16 other North-East towns or cities, and plans new sessions in Hexham, Northumberland, and Whitley Bay, North Tyneside.

Ian Howarth, of the support group the Cult Information Centre, said: “We have certainly had complaints about NKT activities, and we are very concerned about them.”

The centre has been approached by families and friends of some NKT members worried about personality changes among a number of people who join the group putting strain on relationships.

Concerns have also been expressed about the depth of commitment members make within a relatively short time of contacting the NKT, and about the group’s opposition to the Dalai Lama.

The NKT is believed to be Britain’s fastest-growing Buddhist sect with more than 3,000 members, and a publishing business.

Jim Belither, NKT secretary, says his organisation as a whole is no longer involved in the Dorje Shugden controversy, although he admits individual members may be.

“Individuals are free to be linked, but as an organisation, we are not involved.”

Of complaints to the Cult Information Centre he said: “Sometimes people can get over-enthusiastic about the NKT, but then that rubs off, and they get back to everyday life. It’s true some go over the top - but we try to encourage them to have a sensible long-term view.

“I do not believe the criticisms are borne out when you look at them properly. We do not encourage the break-up of families. We encourage people to keep up contact with families. “We do say we alter minds, because we believe all problems arise from the mind. But that comes from individuals, from their own side, not brainwashing.” Power Play Plot

Were monks pawns in power play plot? - As an espionage thriller it would stretch the limits of credibility. But, as Gareth Walsh reports, truth may be stranger than fiction in the story of a North-based sect.

Centre of attention: Conishead Priory, once a home for Durham miners, is now the base of the New Kadampa Tradition.

AMID mature woodland, at the end of a driveway running through Cumbrian pasture, nestles Conishead Priory.

For more than 20 years the former Durham miners’ home has played host to an unlikely resident, Tibetan Buddhist monk Geshe Kelsang.

>From the mansion, the New Kadampa Tradition, of which Kelsang is spiritual head, has spread its influence across the UK overseeing the setting up of residential centres for devotees, and is now pouring hundreds of thousands of pounds into overseas groups.

Among its latest targets is Newcastle, where the NKT hopes to open a permanent centre.

On a superficial level the charity looks like an increasingly successful fringe religious group playing to the spiritual dissatisfaction with ’90s materialist society - though with a few hiccups along the way.

The NKT’s total assets almost doubled from £141,555 in 1993 to £228,663 in 1997. From an income of £367,042 around 65pc went in charitable donations, much to its centres in the UK and overseas.

In its literature, the NKT asks supporters to give interest-free loans, tax-free deeds of covenant or gifts of more than £250, or to be included in supporters’ wills. The purchase of NKT centres is largely facilitated by using residents’ rents to cover mortgages.

The NKT supporters have been offered, and accepted, more than £90,000 in grants from English Heritage to renovate their Cumbria headquarters, although only £15,718 has so far been taken up.

South Lakeland District Council has previously taken enforcement action following unauthorised work on the grade two-listed priory but says the owners are now complying with regulations.

On a more profound level however, the NKT may have inadvertently stepped into a Communist plot affecting the lives of millions of Tibetans.

Despite the tranquillity of the priory, renamed the Manjushri Centre, all has not been well in Buddhaland. For not only has Kelsang been at odds with the Nobel Prize-winning Dalai Lama, leader of Tibetans exiled by the invasion of their homeland, he may also have unwittingly played straight into the hands of Chinese agents aiming to sow havoc among the Lama’s followers.

The quarrel between the two holy men broke out over the worship of a centuries-old Tibetan deity Dorje Shugden. The Dalai Lama insists Shugden worship is crass, commercial and damaging. Kelsang says the Lama is trampling human rights by trying to ban an important religious practice.

Had their dispute been played out in India, seat of Tibet’s exile government, it would have made at most a few column inches in the West. It was when NKT supporters - Western Buddhists - took to European streets that the schism made headlines.

Following protests in May 1997 the Dalai Lama eventually entered the fray and criticised Dorje Shugden worshippers for praying to the deity for success in business.

Concern about Shugden supporters grew following the bloody murder of the Dalai Lama’s close friend, 70-year-old Lobsang Gyatso, and two young monks, a few hundred yards from the Lama’s northern Indian home.

Shugdens in India were questioned about the killings but were not charged.

The NKT says it has stopped its campaign against the Dalai Lama. But the damage may already have been done in the playing out of a covert political plot featuring unwitting NKT members.

For since China invaded Tibet more than 40 years ago and began to flood it with a Han Chinese population, the Dalai Lama has developed a positive image for himself in the West, creating a thorn in Beijing’s side and an urgent need for the Chinese party PR apparatus to discredit him.

And in “classified documents” allegedly leaked from a Beijing government meeting in 1993 doing the rounds on the Internet, Chinese officials discuss how best to create schisms among the Dalai Lama’s followers as an important means of destabilising him.

The Tibetan government-in-exile believes the Chinese are using Shugden supporters in order to destabilise the Dalai Lama by exploiting the rift.

One exile in the UK said: “We know that the Chinese are encouraging Shugden supporters both inside and outside Tibet. But we have no specific proof - particularly in the West - of how they are being funded.”

Yet in Cumbria NKT secretary Jim Belither says: “We feel Dorje Shugden practice is a valid Buddhist practice. There is no harm to it at all. But for reasons which are a little bit obscure the Dalai Lama is against it.

“I should say we are not in opposition to him in general. The Dalai Lama had effectively banned the practice, then we took up the cause of the people who practise it in India. But it all became very controversial and we have decided to stop our involvement. Most of our people are no longer involved. “Tibetan Dorje Shugden practitioners are certainly not sympathetic towards China. They are as much seeking independence for Tibet as any other Tibetan, and we would be totally behind Tibetan independence.

“If this controversy gives strength to the Chinese, then why did the Dalai Lama open up a rift by banning the practice? Which action gives the Chinese support - his initial action, or the reaction to it?”

SEX AND ORDINATION

According to the New Kadampa Truth Team in the United Kingdom no form of sexual activity is allowed for an ordained person what so ever. However a certain newly ordained monk was told by his teacher Gen Legden from The Vajrapani Buddhist Centre in Blairgowrie Johannesburg that both masterbation and mutual masterbation is allowed. The issue I would like to address here is that the NKT’S ordained sangha are continually breaking their ordination vows. Gen Pagpa the Resident teacher at Vajravahari Centre in the UK has been caught watching pornography on the centre computer. Kelsang Dangwong an american monk who lived at Nagarjuna centre in the UK used to play with barbie dolls and was also caught watching pornography on the centre computer. Tubten Gyatso (Ex Deputy spiritual Director of the NKT) had disrobed after being found having sexual relationships with his students. Samden Gyatso (Ex Deputy spiritual director of the NKT) was asked to disrobe after Kelsang Gyatso wouldnt believe students that he was having sexual relations with many woman and getting a nun pregnant using tantra as a means of seducing them. At Nagarjuna Centre there are students who disrobed for similar reasons, at Amoghasiddhi Centre there was an ex resident teacher who disrobed to marry his student. In Australia a gay resident teacher ran away with one of his students husbands, Kelsang Lodro runs away with another nun. Would you want to end up being your teachers future wife or husband? Would you want the Spiritual Director of your Buddhist tradition to try and seduce you by teaching you his secret tantric lineage?

Attacking the Dalai Lama

Who is the Western Shugden Society?
Why are they aggressively protesting against the Dalai Lama?
Why are they calling the Dalai Lama a saffron robed Muslim and a Buddhist dictator?

After my personal experience with the WSS I can verify that the NKT are largely behind these demonstrations and hide behind the Western Shugden Society so as to escape the negative press, but here are a few points to consider.

That the Western Shugden Society was probably funded by the New Kadampa Tradition (NKT), an UK charity trust, is indicated by these signs:

  • Press speaker: Kelsang Pema - personal assistant to Geshe Kelsang Gyatso for more than 8 years
  • Front man and leader in the USA: Gen-la Kelsang Khyenrab - Deputy Spiritual Director of the NKT
  • Front woman and leader in USA: Gen Kelsang Dekyong - National Spiritual Director of NKT USA
  • Front man and leader in Germany: Gen Kelsang Ananda - National Spiritual Director of NKT Germany
  • Leader in Australia: Gen Kelsang Rabten - National Spiritual Director of NKT Australia
  • Geshe Kelsang Gyatso has asked all his students by email to participate the protests. Among other things he wrote in one of his emails: “[...] To stop this evil action, as the representative of the Western Shugden Society, I personally will organise demonstrations against the Dalai Lama directly. I requested Kelsang Pema and Kelsang Thubchen to do this job for me and they have accepted. Please help Pema and Thubchen with whatever they need. With much love and prayers, Geshe Kelsang Gyatso”. (see Buddhism under assault)
  • Lucy James (USA), official editor of Geshe Kelsang Gyatso’s books and Resident Teacher for several NKT centers, who did not encourage her students thoroughly enough, was immediately removed by Geshe Kelsang from her position as a NKT resident teacher. So there seems to be pressure to local NKT resident teachers to convince their members to go to the protests.
  • The identity of the website of the Western Shugden Society is made hidden via proxy server (Domains by Proxy), however some media data in the files refer to “Tharpa”, a NKT enterprise, which publishes only Geshe Kelsang Gyatso’s books, and to a translator of Kelsang Gyatso’s books in Spain.
  • The past media campaign of the New Kadampa Tradition (1996-1998) against the Dalai Lama was performed under the label Shugden Supporters Community (SSC) and NKT tried likewise to hide their identity.

Is waving your hands in the air calling the Dalai Lama a hypocrite and a lier the sort of thing you would expect from pure Kadampas?

Gen Kelsang Legden

Gen Kelsang Legden is the Resident teacher at the Vajrapani Buddhist Centre in Johannesburg.Below is a copy of an email he sent to one of his students who was living in the UK at the time…

 Nathaniel,

I hope this finds you in time. I have only realized this morning, that the sms you have sent had come from you. I was under impression it was from Antony , so I replied to him.
Anyway, to cut the long story short, I believe you have abandoned the wish to become ordained and I can only guess on what basis. When I tried to analyze the sms and saw the word ordained in inverted comas, I gathered that you have been on to the internet and have come across some smear of anti NKT propaganda, and I know, there is plenty of it. Knowing your inquisitive mind a bit and how you enjoy browsing the internet, I can only imagine that you have been badly influenced by some of the horrible accusations and assumptions people have. Please check the website http://www.newkadampatruth.orgto also see the side of Geshe-la’s. I think you owe this to him. How can we trust the defiled and unreliable minds of ordinary beings and come to quick conclusions? This is very silly and dangerous! In the past this has happened to many people, which is very sad. For a long time we are still very week in our faith and therefore very vulnerable. Faith can be so
quickly destroyed, just one word is enough at times. Unless we protect ourself from such dangers, we will be plunged into doubt very quickly and then blow the most precious opportunity we have been given. Trusting others and our own deluded and disturbed mind. What a grave mistake!! Please think about this decision once more and contemplate deeply how you have strong tendencies to break away from what is actually offering you protection. Have you asked yourself ever why you have lost your own dad so soon? With your Dharma understanding you can remember the teachings on cause and effect. Without a cause, there is no effect. If we don’t continuously create the cause for what we need, we will never have it in the first place. So you have lost your dad, then you took refuge in the “Pureland Tradition” which proofed not to be what you wanted. Then you came to the VBC, gained some experiences, met Venerable Geshe-la and even received HYT empowerment,
the highest initiation within Buddhism. Took refuge in a pure being, Geshe-la and asked him to grant you ordination, which he promised to do. What good, great fortune!! Received amazing assistance and help from your step-dad, and not recognizing his kindness but take it for granted…Then moved to the UK and found a sincere and pure teacher, who offered to help you in many ways. How kind of him. Following your delusions, left and moved to another Centre where you again received amazing assistance and great support. And now, following your delusions once again, blow the most amazing opportunity to become a monk within Geshe-la’s mandala, the NKT. What more can you wish for? How many times do you think can you still run away for? This seems to be a very strong tendency to keep running way and abandon the most precious advise, support, love and refuge. Where do you think can you find the ‘real’ tradition? The real Sangha, the real Guru etc? If you
don’t stop running away, you will never find it. It exists in your own mind, but as long as you don’t remove the mental obscurations from your mind, you will never be able to perceive it. An impure mind perceives an impure world…Now is the time to remove these obscurations and don’t run away from them. You know yourself how that is not a solution for your problems. Stop trusting your own deluded mind but listen to those who have more experience and overcome your pride. Who do you think you are? It is only a humble mind that can take on advise and develop accordingly. So I’m appealing to you to drop this pride and get back down onto the ground of reality. There are many people out there with crazy minds, coming to quick conclusions based on experiences and what they see, trusting their own defiled (by delusions) mind and follow it blindly. This is spiritual suicide. You are responding similar to the way many others have responded, due to
delusions. You have had the experience with Jan, who also ran away due to following his own delusions and the monk at Amogasiddhi Centre who disrobed, all similar situations. So Please Nathaniel, for your own and others sake (including your mothers), think it over and pull yourself together. This will otherwise never stop. Unless you create the causes for having more pleasant experiences, from its own, it will not stop. Buddha said: you are your own enemy and you are your own protector. There is no one else to blame. Open up your wisdom eyes and stop believing your delusions. They will only lead you deeper in to suffering.
Anyway, this is just to give you some more food for thought. It is not too late yet and you can still change your mind. I am telling you all this with a mind of love and compassion. You know I love you and it is my wish to see you happy. I will always care for you but you will have to have the wish to be helped too, otherwise no matter how much I try, I will not be able to succeed.
Please give me a call if you wish or get me on Skype. Our classes are between 11am and 1pm and from 4.30pm – 6.30pm. you can leave me a message or send an sms.
Take care and allow the Buddhas to bless your mind.
Much love
From Legden

Is the NKT a cult?

“Gregory: Well it’s been three years since I was involved with them, and I guess I’m still putting the pieces back, still trying to put the pieces back together again. As a result of what I experienced, I guess I suffered post traumatic stress disorder, and developed an anxiety disorder.

I guess I’m still trying to work through these things to try and function again normally. I don’t seem to be able to function the way I used to, I’m not the same person I used to be, and it’s very difficult to I guess work through these things and slowly start to function again.

From a ABC Radio National transcript: True Stories 12 feb 2006

As Madeline Bunting wrote in her 1996 article in The Guardian, ‘if a follower expresses dissent or has difficulty accepting the NKT teachings, the response is to exonerate the organization and throw the blame back on to the dissenting individual.’ As an example of this, here is a letter that Gyatso wrote to one of his disciples, an ordained monk called Atisha, a Resident Teacher in an NKT centre in the USA called Vikatadamshri Centre. Gyatso had just ordered that the Yahoo group, NKT Chat, be closed down in response to the circulation of news of sexual scandals online, issuing the following statement:

Some small group in our NKT society engage in meaningless activity on
the internet, not only Sangha, some lay. This is incorrect. We are
Kadampa practitioners, Kadampa Teachers. Why are we enjoying
meaningless activity, discussion? We can have a meaningful discussion
with pure practitioners or senior practitioners, Teachers. There is no
meaning in talking about silly things publicly on the internet.
Instead, make meaningful discussion with our pure practitioners,
senior Teachers. Please give my message to the individuals of this group.
Stop this kind of actions. Gen-la Khyenrab, give my message in email
or writing. Stop meaningless discussion on the internet. If you wish,
do meaningful discussion with senior Teachers or pure practitioners,
or meaningful discussion with your Teacher.

No meaning engaging in silly question and answers on the internet.
Please Gen-la Khyenrab, pass my message. I am telling you for your
purpose and our society’s purpose. In this way, keep individuals and
society pure and show very good example.

Atisha politely queried this decision and in response Gyatso wrote a furious response, making the email public to the entire community of Vikatadamshri Centre:

Dear Atisha,

I have received your reply to my letter. You said:

“The NKT is very young; we are spread out over the whole world; and we’re trying to do a very big job. I believe that most ordinary organizations trying to do such a big job would see it as very important to establish a good, secure, private way to communicate using the Internet.”

I find your statement nonsense. I sent my original letter to 33 people. Everybody accepted my request and understood the real meaning. Only you are not happy with my request. I do not want to challenge your view and I do not want the NKT to become like an ordinary organisation. If I accept your view it will cause serious damage for the NKT in the future.

My decision is that you should please resign as Resident Teacher of Vikatadamshtri Buddhist Center. From 25th October 2007 you will no longer be an NKT Resident Teacher. I will appoint a new Resident Teacher for Vikatadamshtri Buddhist Center.

With much love and prayers,

Geshe Kelsang Gyatso

Cc Managers and community of Vikatadamshtri Buddhist Center, Gen-la Khyenrab, NKT Central Office

If you are not aware Geshe Kelsang Gyatso and the NKT have left many people homeless, unemployed and emotionally wrecked. The story of Nathaniel Whiteman, a 20 year old boy who went to England to work for an NKT centre with the aim to take ordination, is proof that South Africa needs to be aware of the NKT because it could be you or your loved ones that end up homeless and without money in a foreign country.
